This photo brings back memories! There was a Kardomah in Holborn Kingsway, London - on the left hand side of the street walking down towards Bush House and the Aldwych. It was situated just past an office block that had once been the beautiful and enormous Stoll Theatre, originally an opera house, then a cinema, then a theatre with one of the last production being Kismet, before it was closed in the late 1950's, then demolished - an altogether sad affair and something that probably wouldn't be allowed now. But the cafe front in this picture reminds me of the Kardomah in Kingsway, although I wouldn't swear that it was exactly the same. I worked just round the corner in Aldwych and used to have my lunch and coffee breaks here in the 1960's. At that time, you could actually read a newspaper or a book in peace and quiet - now, the Starbucks, Nero's etc all play music, sometimes extremely loudly, which is a total turn off and in fact, quite absurd as nobody listens anyway. A pity Kardomah can't open a coffee shop in London again - it would be nice to have a Lyons Tea Shop too!!! Ah well......
I remember that one in Kingsway, worked opposite and we used to go in for lunch most days, followed by the Aldwych Hotel for drinks after work. Good times.
Was there a Kardomah cafe near St Pauls in London ? My mum said she worked there in the 1960s. Just wondered if there were any pictures of the place or of the people who worked there ?
I'm sure there was a Kardomah cafe on Richmond upon Thames high street . Any one recall I use to go in at lunchtimes have a coffee and sandwich just to watch a beautiful young waitress named Cathy
I used to live and work at The Sun Inn on Parkshot, I had afternoon tea there on 28th October 1980 with the actor John Barron (( he played Reggie Perrin’s boss alongside Leonard Rossiter ))
On George Street next to the old post office which became HMV - when the PO moved down the road Kardomah's site was redeveloped and became a Burger King (?) in a brand new building with a double height front window (opposite M&S) - now just a shop.
