  1. My Mum used to take me to the Kardomah .. when i was little .. early 50's -late 50's .. I think it was on Piccadilly .. possibly at the junction of Portland St ..I liked it there .. i remembr lots of wood , and i think the tables were yellowish tile squares on top .

  2. My boss used to meet her friends in the Kardomah Market St every weds for a late lunch, they all dressed in nice suits an always wore hats and gloves. They used to sit on the Balcony, there were about 5 of them. I do remember the place always looked busy. The other one I remember was on St Anns Square Babs

Manchester Archives have some pictures which include the Kardomah and here's one of the branch in Market Street.
It's the Moorish building in the background on the right behind these 1955 sunbathers. http://www.flickr.com/photos/manchesterarchiveplus/5390377900/in/photostream/

Unfortunately the city allowed the site to be redeveloped quite recently. It was, even with a clumsily inserted shop front, a still stylish elegant building above that. A lot of us were saddened to see it go.

I'll look out for other archive images and copy you the links....

I first came across Kardomah in Bold Street when a student in Liverpool in 1969. The fresh aroma of roasting and ground coffee is always irresistible. It was a friendly treat for students looking for a bit of sophistication and good coffee.

  5. From about 1957 to 1960, my mum used to take me every six weeks or so to have my hair cut at "Uncle Sid's" the barbers in the green-tiled basement of Sunlight House (it's now a nasty Bannatyne's gym but the pool is nearly intact) and always afterwards to lunch at the Kardomah where we invariably had minced beef and potato croquettes. I think the whole outing cost two-and-six.

  6. Wow this is a fascinating blog! I just found 2 Kardomah tea caddy tins in a skip. They are labelled with Union Jacks emblazoned with "RICHRAY TEA" packed in England by The Dominion Tea Plantation Co Ltd, Liverpool. Wondering if you could throw aome light on them for me! I love them, they are so historic and quirky! I have photos if you would like to see them. Love the site by the way!
